From an emergency unit of blood to routine laboratory tests — everything is handled in-house.

Whole Blood & Components

Whole Blood & Components

Whole blood, packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelets — matched to what the patient actually needs.

Most patients do not need whole blood. A patient with anaemia needs red cells, a patient who is bleeding after surgery or delivery may need plasma, and a patient with dengue or on chemotherapy may need platelets. Separating each donation into components means one donor can help up to three patients, and every patient gets only what their doctor ordered.

Components available at Syed Blood Bank, Karachi

  • Whole blood — for patients who have lost a large amount of blood.
  • Packed red cells (PRC) — the most commonly requested component, for anaemia, thalassaemia and blood loss.
  • Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) — kept frozen; contains clotting factors for bleeding and clotting problems.
  • Platelet concentrate — for low platelet counts, for example in dengue or during cancer treatment. Platelets keep for only a few days, so call us first to check availability.

How to get blood

Send the patient’s name, blood group, the component and the number of units through our Request Blood page, or call the 24-hour line. Bring the doctor’s request and a fresh blood sample from the patient: red cells are always cross-matched with the patient’s own sample before they are issued, and every unit has already passed our infection screening.

We are in F.B. Area near Gulberg Chowrangi and serve patients in hospitals across Karachi, 24 hours a day.

Grouping & Cross-Matching

Grouping & Cross-Matching

ABO and Rh grouping plus a full cross-match with the patient’s sample before every unit is issued.

Giving blood of the wrong group can cause a serious reaction. That is why we never issue red cells on the blood group alone: every unit is cross-matched against the patient’s own blood sample in our laboratory first.

What we test

  • ABO and Rh (D) grouping of the patient and of every donated unit.
  • Cross-match — the patient’s serum is tested against the donor red cells to make sure they are compatible.
  • Antibody screening on request, for patients who have had many transfusions or pregnancies.

What to bring

A fresh blood sample from the patient, correctly labelled with the patient’s full name and hospital number, and the doctor’s request. If the patient has had a transfusion before, tell us — some patients develop antibodies that make matching take longer.

For patients on regular transfusions, such as thalassaemia, we keep their cross-match history so each visit is quicker and safer.

Infection Screening

Infection Screening

Every donated unit is screened for transfusion-transmitted infections before it can be issued.

Every unit of blood collected at Syed Blood Bank is held in quarantine until it has passed screening for the infections that can be passed on through transfusion. A unit that tests reactive is never issued — it is discarded, and the donor is contacted confidentially for further testing.

Every donated unit is tested for

  • Hepatitis B (HBsAg)
  • Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV)
  • HIV 1 & 2
  • Syphilis
  • Malaria

Test kits and lot numbers are recorded for every run, so any unit can be traced back to its tests, its donor and the patient who received it.

Screening for donors

Before donating, every donor answers a health questionnaire and has their haemoglobin, blood pressure, pulse, weight and temperature checked. Read more on our Donate Blood page.

Laboratory Tests

Laboratory Tests

Routine and specialised tests in our own laboratory, with QR-verifiable reports.

Our laboratory in F.B. Area, Karachi, runs the tests that the blood bank depends on every day — and the same tests are available to walk-in patients and to patients referred by their doctor.

Tests we offer

  • Haematology — complete blood count (CBC), haemoglobin, platelet count, ESR.
  • Blood chemistry — sugar, kidney and liver function and other routine panels.
  • Serology & screening — Hepatitis B and C, HIV and other screening tests.
  • Urine examination.

Reports you can verify

Every report carries a QR code. Scan it, or enter its code on our Verify page, to confirm the report was issued by our laboratory and has not been altered.

Call or WhatsApp us before you come if you need to know whether a test needs fasting. See the Laboratory page for timings.

Regular Transfusion Support

Regular Transfusion Support

Planned, recurring transfusions for thalassaemia and other patients who need blood every few weeks.

Children and adults with thalassaemia major, and patients with some other chronic conditions, need red-cell transfusions every few weeks for life. For these families, finding matched blood again and again is one of the hardest parts of the illness.

How we help

  • Planned appointments — we know when the next transfusion is due and can keep compatible units ready.
  • Consistent cross-matching records — each patient’s group, antibodies and past transfusions are on file, which makes every match safer.
  • Donor arrangement support — we help families organise regular voluntary and replacement donors so stock is there when it is needed.

If your child or family member needs regular blood in Karachi, contact us to register them. And if you want to help these patients, the best thing you can do is become a regular donor.

Donation Drives & Camps

Donation Drives & Camps

We organise blood donation drives with schools, offices, mosques and community groups.

Most blood in Karachi comes from family replacement donors. Voluntary donors who give regularly are what keep a blood bank stocked for emergencies — and a single camp at a university, office or mosque can collect many units in one day.

What we bring to your venue

  • A trained collection team, donor couches and blood bags.
  • Donor screening on site — questionnaire, haemoglobin, blood pressure and weight.
  • Certificates for volunteer donors.

Host a camp

Schools, colleges, universities, offices, factories, mosques and community groups across Karachi can invite us. You arrange a room and donors; we handle the rest. Contact us to choose a date.
